General records of the bureau and its predecessor, the Bureau of Child and Maternal Health, relating to its broad public health responsibilities for maternal and child health, mental health, mental retardation, and school health. Included are correspondence, memoranda, narrative and statistical staff reports, minutes, writings, radio talks, informational materials, and photographs. The photographs consist primarily of publicity photographs of Amy Louise Hunter as well as images of child rearing activities during the 1930s and 1940s and parenting classes.

In 1919, the State Board of Health created the Bureau of Child Welfare and Public Health Nursing. A 1944 reorganization established the Maternal and Child Health Section which included the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health.
